farewell

francesco loro

Humming, the air thick upon roof
tiles reels over the slopes.
Miasma, kindled below by rules
of form, a lantern, still,

Spreads. Often it is a fraternal
offense that wakes me,
while within me ferments eternal
longing for farewell. Dear, spineless

Bologna, serious is
your desire for attention
in the hot streets. And grim

dreams the shame
of hands firm on the chin,
and yawns.

But the air is often heavy
in the moment of farewell.

translated by Brenda Porster
Francesco Loro was born in Bologna in 1985 and spent his childhood with his parents in Anzola, Emilia in the province of Bologna, where he still lives after his father’s death in 2005. A passionate reader of poetry, he has always written poems although he decides to study technical subjects, first at a secondary school specializing in engineering and then at university, where he studies structural engineering and architecture. Besides his love of poetry he is interested in music, and sings and plays the guitar in a group that composes songs in Italian.
