man created god...a brief history of the world in semi-serious verse

f.c. belushi

In the beginning there was the monkey
and he was without voice
in the beginning there was the monkey
and he was without words

He came down from the tree
he stood erect
and he saw that it was good
and his head swelled
and he set himself up as judge
over the other inhabitants of Gaia

He said I am MAN
and it is not enough for me to have dominion over the beasts of earth and sky
and it is not enough for me to have dominion over the sea
perhaps it was better not to have come down from the tree
Lucy?

And man created god
nor did he think about the consequences
and man created god
and evil befell him
and man created god
and so many and unspeakable calamities poured down upon the earth
that the time of the universe would not suffice to tell them all

Calamity upon calamity
and others still
awaited man and his generations

In the beginning there were blood and the bloodthirsty
In the beginning there were blood and those who paid it tribute
In the beginning there were blood and those who guarded it
In the beginning there were blood and its derivatives

The blood went to the head
like a nectar of pure alcohol

And then came the family and for all others death
and there was incest and for the brother death

And the clan came and for all others death
and dwellings built on piles were destroyed

And the tribe came and for all others death
and huts were burnt to the ground

And the fatherland came and for all others death
and war was declared against the enemy

And the people came and for all others death
and pitchforks large and small were used

And the nation came and for all others death
and homes were destroyed and things were destroyed

And the state came and for all others death
and cities and villages were bombed

Then the race returned and there was further calamity
and the blood had risen to the head
and it did not desire to go down to the heart

The circle closes

And so I shall spit upon your graves
and upon your blood

And so I shall spit upon your identities
and upon your clan
and so I shall spit upon your fathers
and upon your mothers
and so I shall spit upon your tribes
and upon your states
and so I shall spit upon your nations
and upon your races
and so I shall spit upon your brothers
and upon your sisters
and so I shall spit upon your families
and upon your peoples
and so I shall spit upon your fatherlands
and upon your dirty wars

And I shall spit upon your Hebrew gods as well
and upon your Christian gods
and I shall spit upon your Muslim gods as well
and upon your pagan gods

And last of all I shall spit upon your graves

And there will there be no universal footbath to save you

It seems he was born – many decades ago - in a border town somewhere. But he considers his birthplace to be an accident. He first ran away from home at the age of seven. He defines himself as without a country, cosmopolitan, internationalist, atheist. He has no roots (plants have roots, not animals) and he wants none. Peace on earth would be his dream, but the events of the last several thousand years give him little to hope for. It is sufficient to consider the latest developments of global capitalism. Private property extended to water is only the harbinger of the furthest Thule – the privatization of air. His poems circulate among a narrow circle of chosen friends spread all over the world (Japan, Germany, Sweden, Italy).
