to the mothers

candelaria romero

the mothers of the plaza de mayo have stopped marching
the enemy is no longer in power
the page is turned
we can leave the canons behind
exchange other looks without gunpowder in our eyes
but who remembers what it was like before?
How do we embrace without the explosion?
How do we kiss without sirens?
Where do we go without having to hide?
How will I love you now that I am not dying?

translated by Brenda Porster
