Chika Unigwe è nata e cresciuta a Enugu (Nigeria) e vive attualmente in Belgio. Ha conseguito il titolo di Ph.D. presso la Università di Leiden (Olanda) con una tesi sull'impegno delle scrittrici Igbo. Ha pubblicato poesie e racconti brevi in riviste e antologie. Ha vinto diversi premi letterari e, con il racconto The Secret, è stata inclusa nella rosa dei candidati al Caine Prize 2004. Il suo primo romanzo, in olandese, si intitola De Feniks (Meulenhoff / Manteau, Anversa, settembre 2005). È presente in antologie, tra cui Sea of Voices, Isle of Story.
